Tuckpointing in Chicago
Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It's meant to wear out before the brick does, and when it fails, water gets in. Tuckpointing replaces it before that water damages brick, plaster, and framing.
Signs You Need Tuckpointing
- Mortar joints recessed more than about 1/4 inch
- Sandy or crumbling mortar
- Gaps or holes in joints, especially on parapets and chimneys
- Stair-step cracking
- Water stains on interior walls or ceilings near exterior walls
How It's Done Right
- Grind out deteriorated mortar to a consistent depth (typically 2 to 2.5 times the joint width)
- Clean the joints of dust and debris
- Repoint with a mortar compatible with the original. Mortar that is too hard can damage older, softer brick.
- Tool the joints to match the original profile
- Clean up the brick face and site
Comparing Contractors
Ask each one how deep they grind, what mortar type they'll use, whether they'll match color and joint profile, and whether the estimate is by square foot or by wall. "Tuckpointing" that only smears new mortar over old joints won't last.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?
Close enough. Technically, true tuckpointing adds a thin contrasting line, but in Chicago both words are used for repointing mortar joints.
How long does it last?
A good repointing job commonly lasts decades.
What does it cost?
It depends on square footage, height, access, and the condition of the joints. → Cost guide
